Founder story
Why the Name Haywood?

Bishop Garfield T. Haywood

Bishop Garfield T. Haywood, a renowned minister, author, and songwriter, was the first Presiding Bishop of the Pentecostal Assemblies of the World (P.A.W.) and a true missions visionary. The founding motto of the P.A.W. was, "Go into all the world and preach the Gospel," and Liberia became one of the earliest and most impactful mission fields where the organization established a strong spiritual footprint — sending missionaries even in the current generation.

Bishop Haywood's life reflected the heart of a Christian servant who was passionate about sharing the love and saving grace of Jesus Christ. His hymn, "Walk in the Light," continues to embody the mission and identity of Haywood Mission Institute. Inspired by his passion, M. C. Bennette lit the flame and named the institution in his honor. Today, that light still shines brightly.

Walk in the light, beautiful light,

Come where the dewdrops of mercy shine bright;

Shine all around us by day and by night,

Jesus, the Light of the world.

— Bishop G. T. Haywood
